The process of creating this design required self reflection and discussing with other females about their experiences, and what expectations have affected them the most. This artwork serves as a reminder to not stay silent, simply because we don’t have to. The women depicted in the illustrations confront the expectations of looking feminine, smiling and being polite. They exist in their natural, unapologetic manner, and ignoring the pressure of feminine norms placed onto them. The typeface used was created by hand cutting letters from National Geographic magazines, rather than stereotypical fashion and beauty magazines, to represent the intelligence that we may lack the confidence to share with others as a result of the backlash from fellow colleagues or peers.
